Popoki House was formed in 2015 in Long Beach, California, the brain child – and labor of love – of multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Katie Blanchard and Taeri Schiffman, partners in both life and music.
Katie Blanchard is an accomplished singer, songwriter and a veteran nightclub musician who has been singing since the age of three and playing guitar since high school. She has studied opera and classical voice technique, but her vocal style is more at home in road houses and honky tonks than opera halls. Katie is a professional audio engineer, theater technician and stage manager who holds associate degrees in electronics and mathematics. Her musical tastes range from big band jazz to roots rock, from blues to bluegrass. (Think Brian Setzer meets Ricky Skaggs, with Bonnie Raitt and Indigo Girls as the opening act.)
Taeri Schiffman began life promisingly enough in Hawaii but was tragically raised in the mountains of Northern Utah and Southern Idaho instead, before escaping to California in the mid-1980s. Despite this setback, musically gifted from a young age, what began as a childhood distraction has become a lifetime obsession for this talented singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who has performed in events as diverse as musical theater, jazz and rock bands, and symphony orchestras. In her copious free time, Taeri earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, and a masters degree in social work (MSW) from the University of Southern California (USC – FIGHT ON!!!). She is an unabashed Deadhead and has long been considered the “psychedelic tie-dyed rainbow sheep” of her family.
